Engaging, practical sessions that make structural engineering easy to understand for schools and homeowners alike.

Private Workshops can be provided at your home, via teams or in our office. The workshops include: an introduction to building regulations, a summary of what is to be considered when designing a home or extension and a design work through of your specific project.
What is an Engineering Workshop?

We offer Educational Workshops and Private Workshops with an aim to share knowledge and insight into the Engineering industry.

Educational Workshops can be provided in schools for groups up to 40. The workshops include: an overview of careers in Engineering, multiple practical activities and technical knowledge sharing.

An Introduction into Structures: Discussing basic structural principals and things that should be considered when designing a structure. (1 hour)

Group Project: The class will be split into small groups and tasked with creating a structure using the materials provided, based on a client brief. (1 hour)

Client Request: Each group will be given a different client request that will need to be accommodated within their structure. There will then be an opportunity for the group to present their structure and how they adapted to accommodate the client's request. (1 hour)

Examples of Structures: We will run through some real-world examples of structures, linking back to the basic structural principals and some challenges that were overcome during design or construction. (1 hour)

Individual Project: The class will be asked to design lightweight structures to support the most weight. Once complete, this will be put to the test. (1 hour)

Overview of Engineering Careers: We will run through a number of different Careers in the Engineering industry (not just Structural Design). This will also be a final opportunity to ask any questions. (1 hour)

Typical Private Workshop Schedule

We start with an introduction to the building regulations, building control and other regulatory bodies that should be considered when undertaking residential design. Prior to the workshop, we will send some links to useful information to maximise the workshop time, so any specific questions can be discussed at this point.

Depending on your preference, we can jump straight into specific design of your structure or provide more generalist requirements for residential design.

If preferred, you can run through some typical design examples, money saving tips and general ‘lessons learnt’ from industry experience.

You will spend the rest of the workshop working alongside your Engineer, to produce a design in line with your requirements.

Following the private workshop, your Engineer will be available via email or phone to answer any questions you have.
A private workshop session lasts up to 6 hours and can take place at your home or the Northern Structural Solutions office.
